If you haven’t heard it already (it’s gotten nearly 15 million hits on YouTube), may I present the astounding a capella Mary, Did You Know? as performed by the Pentatonix.

Check out the Pentatonix YouTube channel for more Christmas magic. Their only instruments are their voices. Even if you think you don’t know who they are, you might remember when they did a cover of Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive with violinist Lindsey Stirling.

The secret ingredient that makes their group so exceptional is bass Avi Kaplan. Who knew that such range and depth– such a luxuriant, mature tone that sounds more heavenly than earthbound– could emanate from one so young. See his and Peter Hollens’ Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair for more of Avi.

(Thank you to my people who introduced me to the first song.)

New video from the Aaron English Band. Good stuff. Great imagery/symbolism/’80s references. I want it to last about three times as long though, and/or develop into a mashup with some Falco Star Wars reference… love it.

There needs to be a 17 minute long version to do true justice to the creativity here. There’s so much good stuff going on behind the guitars and drums… some of it so deliciously retro. (Also, Alan Rickman’s doppelganger is back.)

From the official Aaron English email blast: x-wing drummer is an ode to the utopian future we were promised back in the 20th century. we’re still waiting for it to arrive. dude, where’s my flying car?

Jetsons' Flying Car

Go, Aaron, go…

Happy New Year

What, you say? If Jesus was born in 6 B.C., then we’re in 2008 rather than 2014 (see Star of Wonder), right?

Technicalities aside, let’s not only change the world, but change ourselves for the better in the new year. Lasting change has to start at the individual level. (more…)

Aaron English Lion's Den

Diggin’ this new single from Aaron English and Seattle-area electronica artist Reprecode: http://reprecode1.bandcamp.com/track/lions-den. I hear shades of DM (Perfect), The Shamen, Simple Minds, Chemical Brothers, and a dash of Neil Tennant. I still can’t put my finger on why, but there was a twinge of something in here that made me think of something space jazzy audiomixologist Ezraw would do. (more…)

Richie Havens

Gary Jackson over at A Time for Choosing has posted a nice tribute to Richie Havens, who passed away yesterday at the age of 72.

Remembering Music Legend Richie Havens.

Havens had one of those voices you just can’t forget. There was such energy and power and soul driving his music. So many “artists” today seem hollow at the core despite the outer glitz and glamour, but the convictions and causes of Richie Havens shone through in his performances. I’m reminded of the spirit behind the voice in Havens’ collaboration with Peter Gabriel, The Time of the Turning, (more…)

For those who haven’t seen Cookie Monster’s spoof of Carly Rae Jepsen’s Call Me Maybe already, check out this ode to the wondrous cookie:

The lyrics had me guffawing the first time I listened to it, including the references to selling his soul and freaking out. Hilarious, even if there’s speculation that Ja Rule lent his voice!
