Everything is Awesome

Okay. If you haven’t heard it already, you will. Everything is Awesome, the theme song to The LEGO Movie, will probably never leave your head. It’s… awesome.

An astute father asked me today if this is truly healthy for children to be listening to because it talks about losing your job– and losing in general– as awesome things. Hmm. Good point. Taken literally, that’s not a great attitude for kids to be running around with. I’m also a little weirded out by the “you’re like me/I’m like you” bit and the “party forever” part.

Delving into this a bit further, it sounds that there’s some sarcasm intended because things aren’t so awesome in part of the movie. Perhaps the main character is trying to maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. The plot involves an average guy mistaken for some sort of superhero who teams up with others… including Superman and Batman… to save the world. You can only imagine what zany hijinks this crazy group of square plastic kids get into.

I’ll have to see the song in context to truly understand it. Maybe there’s some shadowy subliminal aspect that makes it such a persistent earworm. But for now, given that I’m an adult who is acutely aware that losing your job and losing in general isn’t cool, I’ll continue to go about my business tonight making up my own lyrics to Everything is Awesome… feel free to join me.
