The Stump Barn

Stump Barn LeBam, Washington

This image is entitled Stump Barn Near Lebam, Washington and was found among family photos. On the back is written “Sylvester’s.” There were a number of Sylvesters in the Orwig branch of the family tree. This likely refers to the Sylvester Orwig born in 1840 in Ohio. I don’t know if that’s him in the picture, but evidently he lived here.

Lebam is a small place on State Route 6 heading out to Raymond, so roughly 20 miles east of Willapa Bay on the Washington coast. This was logging country, and you can see from the size of this stump how gargantuan the trees were back then. They could fit whole horses inside!
