The Burke Museum at the University of Washington has succeeded in bringing the original Seahawks logo to Seattle!

Native mask that likely inspired Seahawks logo is unveiled at Seattle’s Burke Museum

This coming weekend, on November 29th and 30th, the Burke is holding a 12th Fan Family Fun event in honor of the mask’s arrival. On Friday, December 12th, they’re offering free admission as 12’s Free Friday, encouraging people to wear their Seahawks gear and have their picture taken with the mask.

Originally from Vancouver Island, the mask has been housed at the Hudson Museum in Maine for years. As the Seahawks were headed toward the Super Bowl last year, people were asking how the logo came to be. Once this mask was pinpointed as the likely inspiration, a movement started to bring the mask to Seattle, where at the time of the PI.com’s article above, it was sitting next to the Lombardi Trophy.

Whoever carved this masterpiece certainly wouldn’t have foreseen that a bunch of crazed sports fans would someday be clamoring to take selfies with it… yet here we are. Many of us in the Seattle area maintain a deep appreciation for Northwest Coastal art anyway, so hopefully our region’s obsession with the Seahawks will influence others to cultivate the same.
