This is fantastic news for people with celiac disease and related disorders. Dr. Fasano has been at the forefront of celiac research for years. Considering that one in 99 Americans is estimated to have celiac, with one in 33 carrying the gene, millions of people can benefit from such an institute, most of whom are currently misdiagnosed (i.e. “irritable bowel”) or undiagnosed.
Celiac disease is a genetic disorder in which the immune system reacts to gluten, the protein in wheat, barley, and rye. Symptoms vary widely, ranging from gastrointestinal distress to migraines to skin rashes to fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Eliminating gluten from the diet is the remedy. A simple blood test can find celiac disease and other food allergies.
