New Day Dawning

Sunrise 12-31-12 1

Happy New Year everyone! As we enter into the veiled mystery that is 2013, I’m reminded that– no matter what– God is in control. There is no power higher, no force stronger, no love deeper, no grasp tighter, no faithfulness more unfailing. If you are safe in His love there is nothing that can separate you from that.

Isaiah 61 comes to mind– this is the year that we bring good news to the poor, heal those with broken hearts, proclaim freedom for the captives, comfort those who mourn, and release prisoners from the darkness. In other words, let’s make this year count for all the right reasons, the reasons that will echo in eternity!

This morning I happened to glance outside and was awed at how the sky was suddenly billowing in vibrant shades of blush and beryl, salmon and sapphire. Just a few moments later, the heavens faded to a quiet cornflower blue as the sun rose over the trees. “A new day dawning,” I thought– and it is. A new day, a new year, another step closer to the fulfillment of God’s promises.

What amazing gifts the new year brings! An entire year’s worth of wonderful opportunities, given to us one sunrise at a time. Many of the moments ahead will be marvelously disguised as ordinary days, but each one of us has the chance to make something extraordinary out of them. -Douglas Pagel

Update 1/1/13: KOMO News has posted some pictures of this same sunrise over Mt. Rainier (Tahoma). The sun came up behind the tallest of our state’s five volcanoes which created this gargantuan otherworldly shadow. Click on the photo to see the entire gallery.
