Chicago Tribune – Celiac

CD Ribbon

A friend who’s walked with me on my gluten-free journey for the better part of a decade just sent me the Chicago Tribune’s 8-page feature on celiac disease.

She says that it’s the first time a major newspaper has provided such a supplement on celiac.

Thank you to the NFCA for posting the .pdf!

Keep in mind that 1 in 99 Americans is estimated to have celiac disease, 98 percent are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, and 1 in 33 carry the gene for it. It is genetic.

Symptoms can range from rashes to headaches to joint pain to fatigue to diarrhea and constipation to seizures– and then some. People who are given vague diagnoses like irritable bowel syndrome or fibromyalgia, or told that they’re just stressed out, often find out years later, via a simple blood test, that they just needed to change their diet to be well.

I’ll never forget being told, after tests from all kinds of specialists, that I “just needed a really good psychiatrist.” My symptoms were so severe that I could wind up unconscious and injured on the bathroom floor, and that had gone on since childhood. A naturopath took one look at my family history and said “aha!”

Some people are leaded. Some people are unleaded. Some people are diesel. To be healthy we need to know what kind of fuel we should be putting in our vehicles. It is logical that our vehicles break down when we’re not filling them with the right kind of gas.

This is absolutely brilliant! What a great analogy – I will have to find a way to weave this into my conversations with people wondering why I “won’t eat anything.”
