Washington Supreme Court rejects Yates petition

The Washington State Supreme Court has rejected serial killer Robert Yates’ 25-point post-appeal petition asking for relief from alleged trial errors. I knew that this was going to be filed but didn’t know when it would reach the Supreme Court.

Yates, also known as the Spokane Serial Killer, challenged a number of procedural issues and alleged that he didn’t get a fair trial, a fair jury, or in general, a fair shake. He’s been on death row at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary for years and that is unlikely to change. (more…)

On Tuesday the Seattle Times reported that Spokane County has identified a person of interest in the 1990 murders of three women, http://seattletimes.com/html/localnews/2019727223_spokanecoldcase21.html. Douglas/Donna Perry, a man who had gender reassignment surgery a decade after the murders, has been tied to these homicides with DNA and fingerprints after a March arrest on a weapons charge.

I wanted to blog about this as soon as possible because it could clarify a murky chapter in the life of another serial killer, Robert Yates. In 2010 I profiled Yates in a term paper for my master’s degree and spoke to some of the key players in that case. While Yates’ first known victims were murdered in 1975 and one of his victims was found in Skagit County in 1988, his most obvious activity took place in the Spokane area in the 1990s. (more…)
