Reynolds Murder Update

Scales of Justice

954, you will not be forgotten.

That’s how I concluded my January 12th, 2012 post on the murder of former Washington State trooper Ronda Reynolds. The post’s title was borrowed from the Ann Rule book about her death, In the Still of the Night.

Yesterday The Chronicle in Lewis County reported that Reynolds former husband and stepson are after big bucks in court to be “compensated” for their supposedly unfair treatment.

The woman’s former stepson and husband have filed a complaint for damages alleging that Lewis County Coroner Warren McLeod’s inquest into her death was “scandalous and libelous and did severe damage to the plaintiffs’ reputations and integrity.”

The lawsuit for unspecified damages was filed Friday in Lewis County Superior Court more than two years after an unprecedented coroner’s inquest into Ronda Reynolds disputed death.

After the seven-day coroner’s inquest and about 10 hours of deliberations, a five-person jury ruled on Oct. 19, 2011, that Reynolds’ death was a homicide and not a suicide as was originally determined, and that her husband, Ronald Reynolds, and oldest stepson, Jonathan Reynolds, were potentially responsible.

Both men claim that they lost their jobs due to these allegations. Did I mention that Ron Reynolds was the Toledo Elementary School principal? And that last year the Toledo School District agreed to pay him $140,000 over three years to resign?

You’ll have to review the above post to get a feel of just how deeply Ron Reynolds and his sons might be involved. While there might never be a conviction in this case thanks to how the crime scene and follow-up was handled, there was a clear pattern of behavior in this household that to me screams “woman in danger.”

Ronda loved her dogs. Rule wrote about how one dog disappeared and another was found beaten to death. Jonathan Reynolds, the stepson seeking damages, hated Ronda, had threatened to kill her, and had spied on her in the bathroom multiple times. Another stepson kept and displayed the crime scene tape from her murder. Ron Reynolds had his three sons leave the house before deputies arrived to investigate Ronda’s “suicide” by firearm that occurred when others were home– his sons might have even been having a party at the time. Rule did a thorough job of analyzing this information in her book and it raises a lot of questions.

The more you read about this case, the more suspicious it gets. It’s clear that multiple people know more about the circumstances of Ronda’s death than they have disclosed. This shouldn’t be a big mystery 15 years later; more than one somebody knows what happened. And know the most likely candidates want to be compensated for their “suffering.”

If Ron and Jonathan Reynolds are guilty, this is an extremely narcissistic move. But in a narcissist’s world, the only thing that matters is them and how they can manipulate everyone’s reality so that they appear to be the real victim. It’s sickening but it’s how they roll– they don’t care about how their actions have affected others, they care about what works for them. Narcissists and sociopaths believe that what they do, no matter how egregious, is justified, and that others owe them.

Switching gears, who is looking for Katie Huttula Reynolds? She is Ron’s ex-wife who was having an affair with him at the time of Ronda’s death. Ann Rule noted that when Ronda’s mother showed up at the house less than 48 hours after Ronda was “found” in a closet with a bullet in her head, Katie walked out of the master bedroom as if nothing had happened. Rule likened it to sleeping on someone’s grave–the closet was right next to the bedroom– and questioned why the police had allowed them to be there at all.

My blog has received a number of hits because of people searching on variations of Huttula Reynolds’ name. I realize that she could very well hold some answers in this case and could be protecting any of her and Ron’s five sons as well. I have wondered if she could be in danger because of what she might know. What if her loyalty to anyone she might be protecting falters? And if she does know more than she’s disclosed, what does she hope to gain in the long run by keeping that inside?

We’ll see what happens with this latest chapter in a very sad and shadowy case. It must be horrifying for Ronda Reynolds’ family, particularly her mother Barb Thompson, to see these people seek “justice” given what was taken from her, and I hope for her sake this case is swiftly dismissed.

Justice for Ronda

  1. I think that Ron Reynolds has connections with societies that quite a few in the Lewis County law enforcement also belong to because the UNWILLINGNESS to even treat him as a possible murder suspect – an almost obligatory assumption in an “unexplained death is an OUTRAGE – LONG before this glaring negligence became a conspicuous example of justice denied.

  2. I just finished watching a rerun of the 48 hours show on the Ronda Reynolds killing. I am sick about it! Clearly Ron and Jonathan are involved. It’s hard to tell for sure who the shooter is- my gut is the father. He so many times was elusive or lying. Talking about not knowing what his wife’s dominant hand was, that’s bs. And not remembering whether he was in bed with his ex-wife the night of the killing is ridiculous! The son clearly looks like a drug addict. This is ugly to say, but I hope the father gets some form of cancer and suffers a long and painful death! That would be God’s judgment to me. He’s supposed to be some kind of a religious man , but he’s been married four times ! He certainly is not a faithful man. I’m not quite sure what the son’s punishment should be, but he looks like he’ll be arrested for something else sometime in his life and hopefully then he will get his correct punishment. I very much believe that Rhonda was murdered. If supposedly her husband had held her all night because she was so depressed, a good husband would have taken her to the hospital or at least taken her in the bed with him and hold her and given her comfort till they both fell asleep. This is truly an example of a narcissistic, sociopath or psychopath. I’m just sick to my stomach about it all. What sickening Liars they both are. This story really really tears at my heart!

    1. Hi all. Just a reminder to be careful what you disclose about yourselves and the names you use here. This continues to be a popular post and it’s likely that people directly involved in the case are reading these comments. While we stand in faith that they will be held accountable in this life, we also want to be mindful of our own safety. Thanks.

      1. I’m not involved but have seen next to nothing about this in the news or otherwise since I wrote the article years ago. It seems the authorities are going to continue to judge this a suicide. The only way that will change is if the rest of us continue to demand accountability and further investigation.

    2. I can hardly believe that Ron and his son are such horrible people. I knew them when Kate and Ron were so different. They were Christian, kind and loving people, how could the change have been so drastic. What great sorrow their behaviors have caused those who loved them. Please keep me informed.

  5. I have believed all along that she was murdered. With all the evidence it would have been impossible for Ronda to kill herself like she was found. The murderer needs to pay his dues big time!!! Ron Reynolds and son Johnathan sure seem suspicious!

    1. I wish I had new information to share. This story lights up in the media from time to time but then fades away. This blog post, however, is as popular as ever. I suspect that people with direct involvement check in to monitor what others are saying. No one on here, though, has information that could harm or convict them. It’s just that many of us know something isn’t right and pray for any additional truth to come out.

  6. This is my most popular comments thread. People have been watching it for years. It could just be the curious, but it could also be the guilty. Yet again, it could be those who know in their hearts that they need to come forward with what they know. By protecting them you’re only condemning yourself.

    1. The marriage and murder were premeditated. Ronda wanted the $15k from her trooper retirement that she invested in Ron’s house. She asked him for the $15k or said that she would go to court to get half of his coming retirement package. (Ron’s early retirement was in place prior to her murder.) Instead, he had a $50k insurance policy in her name through Walmart (from her security job benefits), that he signed up for just before she was killed. He paid only one premium prior to collecting on the policy. ALSO, the gun shot residue on the top pillow with the bullet hole is the biggest indicator of murder. Why can’t the forensic photographs be enough to establish a civil case? Why hasn’t Ronda’s mother filed a civil case? And how did Ronda wrap herself in a plugged in electric blanket post-mortem? Was a toxicology report done? Could she have been drugged prior to the staging of her death? Lastly, was DNA done on the vaginal semen? Three “boys” were quoted as using meth that night, they easily could have acquired rufies…I think the evidence shows Ron as the mastermind and the boys as some form of accomplices. The ex-wife Catherine/Katie (I’ve seen both spellings) who is not out of Ron’s life has something to do with this as well. She is the one I would like to see interviewed at length, although she may be motivated to protect her sons.

  15. Kudos, Barb Thompson, you are a mother in the truest sense, a champion of justice for all!
In my humble opinion, Jonathan has the look and feel of a very disturbed and tweaked out methamphetamine long time user. I believe he is the shooter suspect and his father covered for him. The family unit appears to be very dysfunctional if not sociopathic in actions.
Unfortunately this case may never be resolved. The mere fact father and son are filing this lawsuit tells me where their heart lies. In all the interviews publicized neither have ever displayed any signs of being hurt or having sincere sorrowful feelings for Rhonda. Both only talk about themselves and how her death has made their lives more difficult. I’ve seen no signs of true human compassion.

    1. I posted this a while ago and am not sure where the lawsuit stands at this point.

Your thoughts are spot on– they talk about themselves. This is a behavior I’ve noted in the so-called apologies of serial killers while being sentenced and elsewhere– their thoughts are about themselves. There is no real remorse, only something that resembles remorse in regard how their actions have affected themselves. The only proven way to get through to such people is for them to understand the consequences to themselves because they don’t truly care how their actions affect others. And even then, they might be so confident in their ability to get away with whatever they’ve done that they don’t care about a few measly consequences.

The people involved in this case are no criminal geniuses and will ultimately be held accountable. God is keeping score. If they don’t answer for their evil in this life, the second they leave here they will have to. All the more reason to share what they know now and be certain of their eternal standing.

      2. That is a fantastic point. Then there would be sensationalistic reporting for years on the “black widow” in our midst. In contrast, these people get to go about their lives with no real consequences.

The general public doesn’t believe this was a suicide. No one believes it was a stranger murder. It’s been obvious since day one that there are things that are very wrong with this case and many questions yet to be answered.

I don’t doubt that some of the people involved check on this comments thread regularly. While there must continue to be a public outcry about this case, please use caution when posting online as it could reveal your identity. But those responsible should know that concerned citizens won’t be intimidated into silence either.

At first I tended to believe Ron, but after he lied about his ex-wife not sleeping in the bed with him, that gave me a yardstick on which to base his demeanor when he lied. I think that Ron and his son filing a lawsuit may awaken a sleeping giant and eventually being prosecuted for their actions.

    1. Hi. Thanks for coming by. We here in the Northwest have a lot of Australian connections and I’ve always heard good things from people who’ve lived in Melbourne.

I don’t know that this is how the whole U.S.A. works. See my posts on the murder of Susann Smith– just today, her estranged husband was sentenced for her horrific murder.

In the Reynolds case, the crime scene was not handled like it should have been, witness statements were not taken, interviews were not done– there was a lot wrong from the very beginning. So proving that this was murder has been difficult.

It’s apparent, like you said, that there are people who could still speak up and close this case, but they either don’t have the fortitude or are scared. It would work to their advantage that practically the whole world knows about this case, so officials would have to tread carefully with how they handle any new information.

They had vital information and were calling it into police several times. He never talked to them until twelve years after the fact? No one did.

    1. Thanks for the insight. It seems like a lot of things should have happened immediately upon discovery of this death that didn’t. Ann Rule pointed out that a lot of people were allowed at the scene and the Reynolds sons were all sent away.

It can be absolutely maddening to get the police to believe that you might have pertinent information sometimes, or to convince them to interview potential witnesses. To be objective, shouldn’t they talk to anyone who might be a witness or have information about the situation? Instead, they sometimes take the word of the possibly convincing but utterly dishonest people of interest with something to hide.

  23. I just learned of this tragedy today. I went to high school with Ron’s son Micah and was looking for info on him online and found Anne’s book. I went to school with a lot of people that strayed from the right path, but Micah was truly disturbing. I was good friends with him for 3 years until my parents forbade me from hanging out with him. Not that they needed to because near the end of the friendship I saw enough strange behavior that I wanted to stay clear of him myself. I’m saddened to learn of this tragedy, but not surprised to see the names of those who were most likely involved. Sounds like they were all cut from the same cloth. People capable of such terrible acts should not walk with the rest of us and the 1 that I knew the most displayed sociopathic behavior routinely late in high school. I should note that I googled his name expecting to find it associated with an arrest of some sort.

  26. Law enforcement and the justice system really failed Ronda and her family. With essentially nothing to lose, since they are walking around as free men and have been basically mocking Ronda with their behavior, the DA should get his bum in gear, build a case and take it before a jury. Cases with circumstantial evidence can be won and if there were ever people deserving of punishment this father and son certainly fit the bill.

  28. I knew Ronda and Mark Liburdi, not well, but Ronda better. She was not a suicide. Obviously from the weapon being moved, the children leaving the home, and the crime scene being compromised from the moment of being reported, I am convinced that it wasn’t ignorance on Lewis County’s part, but assistance. If you delve deeper into the lives of all of the people involved in the initial investigation, you will find the link needed to finally catch your killer. We all know who did it, that’s not the issue. How they covered the crime scene is the issue. There had to be a whole lot more going on than what happened that day. That’s ok though, because Ronda is in a better place.

We women also have a tendency with these types to think that our love is so great and powerful that it will make him forget all of his former entanglements. There are so many reasons. I doubt she knew what she was getting into. So many of us don’t. I really can’t call it an error of judgment on her part because dark souls often masquerade as angels of light.

    1. Well said. Rule’s book could be a textbook for how NOT to investigate a murder scene. It’s no wonder that the coroner ultimately said it was a homicide.

Many people believe that the oldest Reynolds son killed her, especially because of his stalking and reported abuse of her pets. But there’s no doubt that the parents covered for the boys regardless of what happened. I think the mother could blow this all wide open (and perhaps that’s why she doesn’t; she could be risking her life too).

I agree that Barb is amazing. It takes backbone to stand up to public agencies and tell them they’re wrong. Let’s hope and pray that the killer and all of his accomplices are still brought to justice.

  32. I think all three of them Mom, Husband and the Son should have taken a lie detector test. I also think the Father did not do it. But he is a liar, he lied on TV when he and his wife gave two different answers about sleeping in the same bed. The boy was sent away, because he did not want the police asking them questions that night, because he may have suspected one of them did it since the does were also murdered. I do believe this boy liked Rhonda and did not want to see her leave, that’s what young boys do at that age, if you don’t return the passion, they seem rejected and he did not want her to leave in life so he killed her. He also lied on TV when he said he did the drugs after the fact. How would they know he did crystal meth before she was murdered. It’s amazing to me that the prosecutor denied this woman a fair trial. Just amazing. Sometimes we give “People” two much power. Incases where one Man/Women can make a decision especially about a life circumstance; There should always be 3 people making a decision, never one, Never! No one person should have that much power over another’s life. What is a jury for if a decision can be made before they are booked. A prosecutor can simply say, No, because the police still believe it was suicide; that’s absurd! if a ruling is that it was not suicide, they can still hold on to that and not do their jobs. Lastly and more important than anything else said here. I am so very tired of everyone saying we have a great justice system. The justices system is broken and has been for many years, it does not get better, it get’s worse. the only added compliment to the system is DNA over the years; and what does that do for the justice system, it’s freeing so many people from jail it’s embarrassing and moreover proof that it DOES NOT WORK! This needs to be our next tackle in America. People a loosing their lives and that is not funny, you can’t get that back.
